While the activity is often harmless and a great way to keep your children occupied, it's extremely easy to have the sticky goo get caught on their hands, face, clothes, and, worst of all, hair. It can become a parent's worst nightmare quickly. If your child loves to play with slime, you have to be prepared for the inevitable.

So if or when this happens, don't panic – and definitely do not resort to grabbing a pair of scissors right away. In this article, we will give you painless solutions to how to get slime out of hair without giving them a new hairdo!

What is Slime?

Slime is usually made of household ingredients, which is beneficial in knowing what to use to counteract these when trying to remove it from stubborn spots. Most slime is made with glue, borax, baking soda, and food coloring. Therefore, our removal suggestions are mostly products you have at home as well! Most likely, you have these items right in your pantry.

How To Get all the Slime Out Of Hair

If you get slime in your hair, it's best to remove slime from your hair quickly. Slim can dry up quickly and form clumps that make the removing process more difficult and prolong the cleaning process. Before diving in, try to remove as much slime as possible with your hand from your dry hair.

How To Get Slime Out Of Hair With Conditioner

Starting with the basics, if you have small amounts of slime stuck in your or your kid's hair – we recommend the conditioner shampoo method.

First, wet hair in warm water to loosen the clumps, then apply a large handful of conditioner to the whole head. Work the conditioner through the wet hair with your hands (we do not recommend combing until all the slime is removed). Repeat this process until all the slime is removed; lather more conditioner on areas that are stubborn to release.

Once the hair is clean, repeat the wash one more time. Apply shampoo and then use a fine-tooth comb or brush through the hair gently to get the rest of the slime out and apply leave-in products to soothe the hair from any pulling.

How To Get Slime Out Of Hair With Oil

If the slime in your child's hair seems too thickly intertwined, as chewing gum got stuck in the hair, you can try to remove slime from the hair using almost any cooking oil or oil-based products. This is the best way to remove slime as it helps soften the chemical makeup of the slime and have it safely extracted. You can use almost any oil, such as vegetable oil, olive oil, baby oil, or coconut oil.

Use your hands to apply oil over the hair and cover all parts of the slime, slowly massaging into the clumped areas with care. You may need to use a few spoonfuls of oil into the slimy strands. Once the slime starts loosening, it should slide out of the hair with adequate oiling. Repeat this process mostly removed, and then use a comb to gently comb through the knots that may be left in the hair while also removing excess particles. Finish with a hot shower with normal shampoo and conditioner to wash hair until it is completely clean.

How To Get Slime Out Of Hair With Mayo

If the oil or conditioner methods of removing slime do not work, you can use the mayo method to get the job done. Take a spoonful of mayonnaise, yes, mayonnaise, and apply that to your kid's hair, working it through with either your fingers or a comb. Like the other remedies, repeat this process until the majority of the visible slime is removed. Then wash your hair as usual until you remove the slime completely.

How To Get Slime Out Of Hair With Smooth Peanut Butter

If you do not have mayo, you can opt for a handful of smooth peanut butter to remove the slime and a great way to detangle to get dried slime out.

Apply peanut butter to the area that is covered with slime. This may be a bit sticky to work with, but by placing peanut butter on the slime the stickiness will counteract and work to remove the substance.

If there is still residue left, no worries. Taking a long shower with hot water and a scalp massage will help remove any remaining slime particles. Then fully wash the hair with shampoo and conditioner as usual.

How To Get Slime Out Of Hair With Apple Cider Vinegar

To remove big globs of slime, try removing it with an apple cider vinegar mixture, as it can break down the slime. To make this mix, use 2/3 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/3 cup of warm water to prevent hair damage. Mix it well and then pour the diluted vinegar onto the hair and gently massage with fingertips. Continue applying until it's slime free.

Take a warm shower and apply conditioner to remove any remaining residue left behind. Rinse out the condition, then shampoo your hair, as usual, to get rid of the vinegar smell.

Tip: Goggles are recommended to prevent the vinegar from getting into your kid's eyes.

How To Get Slime Out Of Hair With Ice Cubes

You can remove the slime with an ice cube. Ice cubes can freeze the slime can, cause it to crack, and make it easier to scrape out of hair. The method is simple and worth a try, but it is not recommended for weak and damaged hair as it can cause hair to break.

Place an ice cube directly onto the slime to freeze it. Gently pull and remove them, and then use a comb to get the slime out.

Remove Slime With Coca Cola

Coke is not only just a refreshing carbonated soft drink, and it can help you with cleaning too. It can help dry slime out of your hair to give you the best results.

To use this method, dip your hair in coke and let it sit for a few minutes. The properties in the soft drink will help lose up the glue and remove slime. Then wash your hair like you usually do.

How To Remove Color Stain From Light Colored Hair

If you have darker colored hair, food coloring isn't a big problem. But if you have lighter hair, food coloring is one of the worst stains to remove. One way to remove the slime stain is using a color stripping shampoo, and another way is to use a little rubbing alcohol with a paper towel to get the tint out.

How to Remove Food Coloring Stains From Cloth And Skin

If you have leftover food coloring stains on your skin or clothes, do not worry. This process of removing colored stains is much easier. If the slime stain coloring has left your hands stained, you can take a warm cloth and soak it in white vinegar to scrub the stain away. If it persists, try using a combination of baking soda and water. Slime stains on the skin will fade within a day or so if not treated as well.

Removing slime coloring from clothing is a fairly similar process to any other type of stain. You can throw the article of clothing into the wash with a normal laundry load, which will most likely do the trick. You can spot the colored area with your go-to stain remover if the stain persists. If you find clumps of slime stuck to the clothing, it is recommended to apply a generous amount of dish soap and warm water to the area and rub the clothing together to create friction to remove it. You can also gently use a scrubbing brush to break up the slime particles, but be careful not to tear the fabric or create pulls. Wash the clothing as needed after excess slime is taken off.

Slime can be a messy activity, but it sure is a fun and safe way to keep your kids happy and smiling. If you happen to get yourself into a sticky situation when playing with the slime, utilize our recommendations above for an easy clean-up!
